Killoe and Slashers will meet again in a massive first round clash

Peter Hanley Motors 2013 Senior Football Championship Draw

The draws for the 2013 Senior and Intermediate Football Championships were made at the November County Board meeting in Aras Ui Bhriain, Glennon Brothers Pearse Park, on Tuesday night and in a most exciting start to the Connolly Cup campaign next year the 2012 finalists Killoe Young Emmets (the county champions) and Longford Slashers will renew rivalry in a massive first round clash.

In a significant change to the championship format in 2013, three clubs will be relegated to leave 10 teams competing for the Connolly Cup in 2014 (including the promoted Intermediate champions in 2013) and thus the pressure will immediately be on those teams who lose their opening round fixtures.

Operating with much the same format, there will be an Open Draw for 3 separate rounds in the senior championship, compared to four series of group fixtures that were played in the 2012 Connolly Cup.

The Open Draw for Round 2 cannot be made until the first round games are played next summer (and so on) and when this section of the championship (3 rounds of fixtures) is eventually complete, the teams filling the top eight places in the league table will qualify for the quarter-finals.

The bottom four teams in the league table will end up in the round-robin relegation play-offs and just the top team in the demotion section will secure their senior status with the other three clubs making the drop to the 2014 Intermediate Championship.

The eight Intermediate clubs in the county will battle it out for the Gerry Hennessy Cup – Ardagh St. Patrick’s, Ballymore, Carrickedmond, Cashel, Kenagh, Legan Sarsfields, Rathcline and Sean Connolly’s - and the quest for the county title in the second tier next year will be extremely competitive again.

In the format (much the same as the senior grade) there will be an Open Draw for 3 separate rounds in the 2013 Intermediate Championship. The Open Draw for Round 2 cannot be made until the first round games are played next summer (and so on) and when this section of the championship (3 rounds of fixtures) is eventually complete, the teams filling the top four places in the league table will qualify for the semi-finals.

The bottom four teams in the league table will end up in the relegation play-offs and one club will be eventually relegated to the 2014 Junior Championship.
