Defence lets Cavan down in defeat by Wexford
Cavan senior football manager Val Andrews offered no defence for his defence last Sunday as 14-man Wexford won pulling up in the opening round National Football League Division 3 clash at Wexford Park.
In light of his axing of talismanic Seanie Johnston from his squad, Dubliner Andrews might well have had reason to fear for the ability of his forwards to consolidate the feel-good factor generated by the county’s provincial success at both minor and under 21 levels last year.
However Cavan’s attack, minus Johnston, stood up to the plate in admirable style and a 1-13 tally would normally be enough to win most NFL matches.
Sadly for the blues, a near-comatose performance by their rearguard let the side down, big-time, with at least three of Wexford’s majors being eminently preventable.
Andrews expressed the hope that he can find a remedy for his side’s ongoing travails at the back before Longford come calling this coming Saturday evening at Kingspan/Breffni Park:
“Despite conceding three first half goals, we were still only two points down at half-time,” Andrews explained after the game.
“We scored 1-13, enough to win most games. We had a missed penalty, conceded a first half penalty when allowing one of their defenders to run some 30 metres through the defence unchallenged.”
