Cavan on a revenge mission
After crashing to a crushing 11 points defeat (2-16 to 0-11) when the counties clashed in the opening round of the All-Ireland Championship Qualifiers last season, Cavan will be really fired up on this revenge mission and Longford could be hard pressed to get a result in Round 2 of the National League.
A big attendance is expected in Breffni Park for the eagerly awaited local derby on Saturday evening next (throw-in 7pm) and Cavan will be quietly confident of winning the Division 3 floodlit fixture despite the defeat away to Wexford on Sunday last.
While top forward Seanie Johnston is no longer part of the team as he seeks a move to Kildare, it was encouraging for Cavan to score 1-13 against the leading contenders for promotion but Val Andrews side were always fighting an uphill battle after conceding three goals in the first half.
Wexford held a commanding 3-2 to 0-3 lead at one stage but Cavan showed a lot of character in staging a very determined comeback and just a single point separated the sides when midfielder Gearoid McKiernan scored a superb goal in the 56th minute.
