AIB Leinster Club Senior Football Championship First Round
With little time to celebrate their Connolly Cup success, Killoe Young Emmets are back in action on Sunday next when they take on the Wexford champions St. Anne’s, Rathangan in the Leinster Club Senior Football first round clash at Glennon Brothers Pearse Park (throw-in 2.30pm).
Although it appears to be a decent opportunity for the 2012 Longford champions to make further progress in the provincial series, particularly with home advantage, St. Anne’s were most impressive in crushing Castletown 2-14 to 0-8 in the Wexford senior title decider on Sunday October 7th.
According to reports, St. Anne’s produced a fine exhibition of football laced with skill and pace and leading the charge for glory was Wexford star Redmond Barry who produced a superb display at full-forward to clock up the tremendous tally of 1-8 (six frees).
Red Barry is certainly no stranger to Longford supporters as he scored the winning point for Wexford in the Leinster Senior Football Championship quarter-final replay at O’Connor Park, Tullamore back in June and also fired home the crucial only goal in the early stages of that game as his county came out on top by the minimum of margins, 1-13 to 0-15.
That was agonising heartbreak for Longford but hopefully some measure of revenge can be gained on this occasion as Killoe Young Emmets bid to cross the first hurdle in the Leinster Club Championship in their efforts to earn another home tie in the quarter-final against the eventual Meath champions Navan O’Mahony’s or Wolfe Tones on Sunday November 11th.
While Redmond Barry is apparently the only member of the St. Anne’s team that featured for the Wexford seniors in the 2012 season, fellow clubmen Sean Gaule (defender) and Liam Og McGovern (attacker) played on the county U-21 team that defeated Longford by a point in the 2011 Leinster Final.
Thus a tough task could be in prospect for Killoe, so soon after winning the county senior championship title, but they definitely have the potential to overcome the challenge of St. Anne’s when the emphasis will be very much on containing the threat of their dangerman Red Barry.
