BMX cyclist ponders return to velodrome
Great Britain’s Shaneze Reade is hoping it’s a case of third time lucky at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Games after failing to land an Olympic medal for the second successive time in last week’s BMX final.
The 23-year old part-Jamaican from Crewe and who has strong family connections with Granard finished sixth at the Olympic Velopark following a sluggish start.
It was a result which Reade had been bitterly hoping to avoid after seeing her medal hopes also come unstuck in Beijing four years earlier.
Giving her reaction earlier this week, Reade even hinted at making a return to Rio’s velodrome in 2016.
“I believe I’ve got a lot to offer on the track and in BMX,” said Reade. “I can definitely say BMX is at the forefront of that, because I’ve got unfinished business.
“But at the same time let’s see where the track world takes me. I only ever did six-week blocks on the track and I’ve seen some fantastic results. In the team sprint times have moved on from when I did it; people are training for that event now.”
Despite her obvious anguish, the straight talking BMX cyclist remains loyally steadfast when it comes to her Irish connections.
“My nan is full Irish with a strong accent,” she said. “She’s got 15 or 16 brothers and sisters and lots of them are also in Crewe. But we’ve got loads of family in Granard, in Ireland, and everyone there knows about me. It’s quite funny.”
