All set for the visit of the Liverpool Legends
The waiting is almost over and Longford Town FC are getting ready to host the highly anticipated Liverpool Legends v Longford Town exhibition match at Flancare Park, Longford on Sunday next, 12th September, kick-off 1.45 pm.
A game Liverpool fans and the county of Longford and beyond won't want to miss!
With the announcement of the full Liverpool Legends playing squad, the fans in Longford are in for a fantastic day! Players confirmed include, Ireland Legends John Aldridge and Jason McAteer, the great Dane Jan Molby, European Cup winners Phil Neal and Alan Kennedy and many more.
Jim Hanley, Chairman of Longford Town FC said: "On behalf of Longford Town FC I take great pleasure in welcoming the Liverpool Legends XI to Flancare Park.
Sometimes the word Legend is abused, but not so in this instance. These players have graced the most famous stadiums across Europe and indeed, in some cases, the world, playing at the highest level possible. It is fantastic to see them playing at Flancare Park.
It is both an honour and indeed a huge source of pride for all at the Club. It is a privilege to offer them the warmest possible welcome to Longford.
I am also delighted to give a warm welcome to all the former Longford Town Stars who have made themselves available to play in this game. Players like Alan Murphy, Dean Fitzgerald, Alan McNally, Vinny Perth, Wesley Byrne and Richie Parsons are household names in this area and are indeed Legends in their own right, having played for the 'Town' in what was the club's most successful period to date.
Their names are etched in Longford folklore forever as proud and skilful wearers of the famous red and black.
Zac Hackett is one of the 'Town's' all time greats, he was one of the most gifted midfielders of his generation and of course went on to manage the club.
Although Dessie Barry is best remembered for his exploits and achievements during his gaelic football playing days he also represented Longford Town FC with pride on a number of occasions.
All involved with Longford Town FC are eagerly awaiting the game and look forward to seeing all the familiar faces showing their silken skills on the hallowed turf at Flancare Park once again.
We anticipate a huge show of support from all in the local and surrounding areas to watch these stars in action.
The fact that our first team manager Tony Cousins is himself a former Liverpool player also adds to the occasion". He continued,"The gala dinner which follows the match in the Longford Arms Hotel also promises to be an exciting event where our loyal supporters and sponsors will get the opportunity to mingle with the Liverpool legends and get the all important photos and autographs!"
John Aldridge commented: "Myself and the rest of the Liverpool lads are really looking forward to coming to Longford next weekend! We have had a busy summer playing all over the world with the Liverpool Legends, but there is nothing quite like the welcome we get when we come to Ireland! We are all in good shape for the match, we will be playing to win on the day, so we hope the fans will come out and support us on Sunday!"
Legends XI organisers commented, "These Legends games are always such a fun day out for everyone to enjoy. The games we organise are friendlies but we always find that the competitive streak comes out in the players as soon as they step foot on the pitch.
"The Liverpool stars may be a bit older but they haven't lost their drive for winning or skill with the ball, it's just remarkable to watch. Any fan would enjoy a day like this!"
