Earning a second income from home

ADVERTORIAL FEATURE

15th August 2012

You probably know someone that’s making a huge success of an online business, all from the comfort of their own home. Or at least a friend of a friend who’s really making the most out of eBay. It sounds easy doesn’t it? In reality it’s anything but easy. If it was easy we’d all be doing it. Some people are making a success of it though. So it can be done; you just need to put in the time and effort.

Effort isn’t everything though. You need a concept and a logistical solution covering everything from your website to your parcel delivery service. Here a few tips on what you need to do.

Develop a concept

It’s the hardest part; but you need to create a concept from the outset. What are you going to sell? Jewellery, clothes, antiques? It all depends on your passion. After all if you’re going to do something that takes up a lot of your free time, you need to be passionate about it. That said, a viable business idea is required too.

Do your research. What are people searching for online? What are your potential competitors doing?

Source your product

Once you’ve decided on your concept, you need to think long and hard about how you’ll source your product. Will you visit wholesales in the UK in person or find them online? Can you get free samples before you make a big online order? How can you determine the quality? These are all issues you’ll need to tackle at this stage.

Your website and other platforms

So how will you reach your customer base? This question may seem a strange one. Presumably you’ll just reach them through your website; but that’s not your only online option and you’d be foolish to think that. There are a whole host of other platforms which you can sell your products on such as eBay and Amazon, as well as more niche sites such as ASOS when it comes to fashion for example. Some home businesses start on these platforms before ever getting a website in place. It keeps your start-up costs low and enables you to build up a brand before putting your site in place.

When developing your site (whether immediately or after selling on another platform) you need to look for an experienced and trustworthy developer. Cost is always a factor, but if you go too low you could end up with a poor site and many future problems. It’s also vital to host your site with a trusted provider offering the requisite levels of security. This is vital at this stage.

Logistics

Once up and running, you need to save on costs where you can. How much are you paying for business broadband? Have you secured cheap parcel delivery? These are two factors that can certainly eat into your budget from an early stage. Whether sending in bulk or single parcels to the UK or abroad, it pays to research your best option. Losing money each time you send a package can really start eating into your profits.
