Longford competitors take centre stage at Community Games Festival

The 2016 Community Games Festival, in association with the HSE, proved a hit again with 250 competitors from Longford representing their county over both weekends at Athlone Institute of Technology.

Longford’s largest ever ‘team’ enjoyed a memorable festival and on weekend one, the medals haul was - one gold, six silver, three bronze and seven 4th place medals, while on weekend two, three silver medals, four bronze and two 4th place medals were annexed.

“A lot of our participants also made it to the semi finals from heats and into the finals in their events,” explained County Secretary Shirley Maloney. 

She added, “We had a fantastic festival and congratulations to all participants and team/area managers on both weekends.”

Acres Pitch & Putt Ballinalee was once again the venue for the pitch and putt national finals. 

Longford County Managers were were Jo McCormack, Paddy McPhillips and Adeline Galligan. National Festival Final volunteer officials from Longford included Joe Fox, Betty Fox, Patsy Kenny, Shirley Maloney, Marie English and Donal Mulligan. Youth officials were Michaela Cox, Conor English, Niamh Gavigan and judge Siobhan Casey.

National Vice President & Longford Community Games Chairperson Joe Fox said, "In this Olympic Year I have no doubt we have seen a number of future Olympian’s taking part in various events."

He added, "As we approach our Golden Jubilee in 2017, it is with great pride we can confirm this year’s festival was one of the most successful to date."
