St. Mel's U-14 footballers kept alive their hopes of retaining the North Leinster title after scoring a narrow win over Marist College, Athlone at the excellent Keenan Park in Ardagh on Thursday last.

The Longford college got off to the perfect start with a point from Ciaran Donohoe and goals from Robbie Clarke and John Hand. St. Mel's controlled the midfield battle at this stage with captain Dessie Reynolds and Marthynas outstanding.

The scores kept coming with another goal from Ciaran Donohoe and a fine point from midfielder Marthynas and St. Mel's went in at half-time with a commanding 3-6 to 0-5 lead.

But the second half was a different game with Marist calling on some of their big guns from the bench and an early goal rocked St. Mel's. Marist continued to dominate but St. Mel's dug deep, led superbly by Dessie Reynolds who covered every blade of grass and kicked three fine points.

The game had a grandstand finish when Marist got another goal with five minutes to go but St. Mel's held out to win by two points.
