Sean Connolly’s will take part in this year’s Senior Championship, the Longford Leader has learned.
There had been fears that the mid-Longford side would be forced to pull out of the Championship due to a lack of players. Like many clubs, both within the county and nationally, Sean Connolly’s have been hit hard by emigration in recent years.
It is understood the Ballinalee side have lost a minimum of 12 players from last year’s panel, including county panellist Martin Brady who is in the US for the summer. Already struggling with numbers, the club has also suffered a number of injuries to key players.
After attempts to downgrade to Intermediate status for the Championship proved fruitless, the club have battled together and have committed to taking part in the Senior Championship, a spokesperson said. Secretary of Longford County Board, Peter O’ Reilly confirmed this is the case.
Sean Connolly’s are tasked with a difficult opening round as they take on the reigning champions Longford Slashers in the coming weeks.
