Moyne Community School lost out to Dublin side Alexandra College in the FAI Schools Junior (U-16) Girls Leinster Final at the Mullingar Athletic grounds on Monday last.
Moyne CS 4
Alexandra College 2
Moyne, who achieved tremendous success at underage soccer level in recent years, will be extremely disappointed with the outcome. Things were going according to plan for the north Longford School in the early stages of the game and they got off to a brilliant start when Emma Farrelly managed to create space for herself to toe poke the ball into the bottom corner of the net. Despite this advantage, Moyne was put under immense pressure for the remainder of the first half but managed to stay in front. But five minutes into the second half, Alexandra College deservedly scored the equaliser. A free kick on the edge of the Moyne box was teed up by the towering Caroline Healy and her powerful strike found the top corner of the net. Gaining momentum Alexandra then took the lead. An excellent piece of individual skill from Juliette Beastly spotted the Moyne keeper Laura Whelan off her line in finding the back of the net from a long range snap shot. Moyne kept their title hopes alive when Ellen Murphy reacted quickest from a well taken Mandy Cassidy corner to leave the sides all square but the Dublin College piled on the pressure in the closing stages and fired home two quality goals to clinch the Leinster triumph.
