Longford-Westmeath TDs give backing to primary school grants announcement

Longford Westmeath TDs Kevin 'Boxer' Moran and Peter Burke have both given their ringing endorsement to the announcement that close to 40 Longford primary schools are to receive the State funding under the Minor Works Grant scheme for 2016/2017.

Thirty nine Longford based schools will receive €5,500 each plus €18.50 per mainstream pupil and €74 per special needs pupil.

The grant is worth €6,425 for a 50 pupil school and over €11,000 for a 300 pupil school.

"I am very pleased with today’s news so that funding is available to allow the Minor Works Grant 2016/2017 to issue to primary schools this year," said Mr Moran.

"Local schools will receive the grant in the coming weeks."

They were sentiments that were similarly espoused by Fine Gael TD, Peter Burke.

"I know local schools will be spending the money mainly for improvements to school buildings and grounds," he said

"The grant can also cover the improvement or replacement of mechanical and electrical services, buying new furniture and PE equipment, the purchase of floor coverings and window blinds and the updating IT systems."
