New national school project goes to tender in Ballymahon
The new national school development in Ballymahon has gone to tender.
The construction of the new school is believed to be one of the largest developments earmarked for Co Longford next year.
The project is expected to commence around mid 2013 on the site of the old national school, which was closed down following the amalgamation of the primary schools in the picturesque south Longford town back in 2000. The closing date for applications under the tender programme is January 25, next.
Under the development the old school will undergo a major refurbishment and an additional four classrooms will be built on, making the facility an eight room school.
A new state of the art library will also be created, as will four spearate rooms for special needs education. There will also be a staff room and reception area attached.
“The Department of Education & Skills recognised the need for a new primary school here in Ballymahon because of the increase in the numbers of children attending,” Principal, Herbert Farrell told the Leader. “This really is a huge development for Ballymahon and the whole community came on board in an effort to bring the project to fruition. It is the result of a culmination of work between the Board of Management, the Parent’s Association and the people of this town and it well deserved at this stage.”
