Mean Scoil Mhuire Physics Teacher and Project Mentor Padraig MacAodha’s 5th year students impressed judges at this year’s BT Young Scientist and Technology Exhibition with their assignment ‘Are we ready for the big world?’

Aisling Creighton, Shannon Halpin and Nicole Kirwan, all students at the Longford town secondary school developed a project which looked into how prepared Leaving Certificate students in their school were for life away from home. Mr MacAodha explains: “With our Leaving Cert students just a few months away from leaving home to further their studies, we wanted to find out just how ready they were. “

Students were then quizzed on whether they were able to perform daily tasks such as using a washing machine or preparing a meal.

Padraig continues: “The survey we undertook was an extensive survey which is the equivalent of a Red C poll.”

Although Scoil Mhuire came away with no awards, judges showed considerable interest in the school’s work. Padraig says the experience gained by his students during the project process will also serve them well come exam time. “A lot of time was spent doing up the survey and a lot of stats were required to complete it. With important exams to come, it will certainly help the students with Project Maths as the work we have carried out during this project can be incorporated into the exam.”
