Witnesses of crash at Terlicken sought

Gardai have launched a public appeal for information after a serious car accident near Ballymahon last Thursday left a toddler fighting for his life in hospital.
The incident, involving a people carrier, occurred along a stretch of the R392 at Terlicken about one mile west of Ballymahon shortly after 1pm.
As revealed on the Leader’s website on Friday, the stricken two-year-old was first taken to Mullingar’s Midland Regional Hospital before later being transferred to Temple Street Hospital in Dublin.
His condition was described as serious, but over the course of the weekend those fears lessened somewhat with doctors appearing more satisfied with his progress.
Six other passengers who were travelling in the blue coloured Ford Galaxy car, including three adults and three children, were taken to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar for treatment.
All of the victims, who are foreign nationals, sustained a number of injuries, none of which were described as being life threatening.
The scene of the accident, just outside the busy south Longford town, was closed for a lengthy period of time on Thursday afternoon with diversions being put in place.
Crash scene experts closed the road for a second time on Friday as part of an ongoing investigation into what may have caused the accident.
Gardai have so far remained tight lipped, but the Leader understands one line of thought currently being examined is whether the car may have been attempting an overtaking manoeuvre before going out of control.
In an effort to further their own enquiries, gardai have launched an appeal for motorists who may have been travelling along the road at around 1:20pm last Thursday afternoon to contact them.
“There may well have been motorists who may have witnessed this accident and we are asking those people to come forward and assist us,” said Superintendent Denis Shields.
