Warning over thefts from cars
Gardai in the region have warned people about an increasing number of thefts from parked cars.
On Saturday and Sunday the 13th / 14th October seven motorists in both counties Longford and Roscommon had property stolen from their vehicles.
In the majority of cases car windows were smashed; however, in a third of cases the cars were left unlocked. The drivers of all of the vehicles targeted were female and in every case handbags were stolen with mobile phones and cameras also being taken.
In several cases property was left visible from outside the car and over half the thefts occurred while the car was parked outside graveyards.
While female motorists in particular were targeted in recent thefts, all motorists are strongly advised to be vigilant and not to leave handbags, wallets, mobile phones or any valuables in their cars while parked.
If valuables have to be left in vehicles they should be locked in the boot and out of sight. Valuables should never be left visible in unoccupied cars and particular care should be taken when parking at churchyards, graveyards and outside sport clubs. Most importantly of all motorists are asked to always lock their cars when unattended.
