The Longford Triathlon Club raised €4,000 in aid of the Longford Mental Health Association (LMHA) on Friday November 2nd.

Together, approximately 140 people, including 40 triathlon club members and volunteers raised the cash in aid of the local organisation as they took turns swimming, cycling and running in the Longford Sports and Leisure Centre.

The LMHA provide support to carers of patients with mental health problems and their families throughout County Longford. A similar event was also held by the club last year, with all monies raised going towards Chernobyl Children and with World Mental Health Week just passed, the club felt the LMHA were the deserving charity of choice.

Speaking to the Leader, recently appointed Longford Triathlon Club Chairperson David Meadows explained: “There was a big focus on mental health over the past few weeks and with there being a big link between being active and mental health, it seemed like a good fit and we were only too happy to join in.”

Volunteers, who had raised funds through sponsorship cards, got the event underway at 6pm on the Friday evening with members of the club taking over during the smaller hours as David further explained: “Members of the club who are a little more experienced did the early hours while volunteers worked through the day time. Even Cllr Gerry Warnock came in for a half hour to lend his support which was great to see.”

Longford Triathlon Club and Longford Mental Health Association have extended their sincerest thanks to everyone who participated in the triathlon and took part in the street bucket collection. They have thanked everyone who kindly sponsored the participants and gave donations to bucket collectors, baked cakes, pies, buns and donated food and water to the event.

They have also given a very special thank you to the Mall for the use of their facilities and the generous donations from Laurel Lodge, Davis SuperValu, Shanley Fruit and Veg, Stonehouse Cash and Carry, Tesco, Dunnes Stores, Fuel 4 Sport and Argos.

The Longford Triathlon Club is also accepting new members for 2013. Club membership and essential membership to Triathlon Ireland which acts as training and race insurance can be obtained through www.triathlonireland.com.
