Town Council likely to cut rates by one percent

Longford Town councillors look set to follow the lead of their counterparts at county council level by handing down a one per cent rate reduction to local business owners.

And in a further revelation, the Leader has also learned local representatives plan on discussing the extension of free car parking to shoppers over Christmas.

Deputy Mayor, Cllr Paul Connell said slashing rates by one per cent was not enough, indicating a further concession was needed to help businesses.

“A one per cent reduction to the average punter in Longford would be around €45 to €60 per business per year. If we could offer them a couple more customers it would be more meaningful,” he said.
