Town council debate cuts

Local politicians were yesterday (Tuesday) evening discussing the ramifications behind the Government’s recent decision to abolish town councils at a special meeting of Longford Town Council.

The talks, called for by Cllr Tony Flaherty, were also expected to involve attendances from local TDs James Bannon and Robert Troy, with invitations reportedly being dispatched to all four of the Longford-Westmeath constituency’s TDs.

Approaches were also believed to have been made for key figures from the council’s broader represenatative body, the Association of Municipal Authorities of Ireland (AMAI) to attend the meeting. Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan announced plans for a radical shake up of the country’s local government system with a view to saving the taxpayer €420m over four years.
