Thieves hit during festive season
Gardaí in Longford have issued a warning to home-owners to exercise extreme vigilance over their property in the coming days, following a spate of burglaries throughout the county over the festive season.
Between 12am and 8am on Christmas morning, a house at Silchester Terrace, Battery Road, Longford was targeted by burglars. A wallet and handbag were taken in the incident and two people – seen outside the property - are believed to have made their get away in a “small silver car”, according to gardaí. Anyone who was in the area at the time of the incident is asked to come forward and assist gardaí with their inquiries.
Later that day, December 25, thieves broke into an unoccupied house at Curry, Athlone Road, Longford. “Entry was gained through the conservatory and a small number of items were subsequently taken from the home,” a garda spokesperson said, adding that a Playstation, flat screen TV and games were also stolen during a robbery at a house in Kenagh last Wednesday morning.
Speaking to the media about exercising vigilance over property this Christmas, Crime Prevention Officer, Noel Harraghy pointed to the fact that the risk of break-ins and fires “increased at this time of year”. “It is essential that your home is protected against crime at all times over the festive period and that everyone exercises vigilance,” he added.
Meanwhile electricity supply was restored to over 1,300 Longford homes throughout last weekend after gale-force winds and hurricane-strength gusts last Saturday night, cut electricity supply across the board. Many of the areas left without electricity as a direct result of the storm included Drogheda, Ennis, Limerick, Longford, Monaghan, Tipperary and Waterford. On the night winds reached speeds of up to 130km/h, wreaking havoc by tearing down power lines and ripping trees from the ground. Thankfully there have been no reports of injuries during the storm.
