The Longford Town Council 2013 Budget: At a glance

Across as many as nine different service divisions, Longford Town Council expects to spend €6,917,001 between now and December 31.

Income channels are likely to raise €2,767,449 although this figure could rise to nearer the €6.9m mark depending on the council’s ability to collect commercial rates from businesses in 2013.

Local authority rents (€978,926) and parking fines/charges (€984,044) will make up 82 per cent of revenue generated from goods and services.

Recreation and amenity expenditure has €239,619 set aside for this year with €20,000 of that total going to the hugely popular Halloween Dead of Night Festival in October.

The reduction in street cleaning services from a seven to five day week operation includes a reduced figure of €176,878. Contained as part of the council’s environmental services division, a further €53,969 has been allocated to continued maintenance of Ballymacormack Cemetery and €42,006 for the retention of a Litter Warden Service.

A total of 105 ‘on the spot’ litter fines were handed out to members of the public by Longford Town Council last year, 15 less than the 120 recorded in 2011.

Longford’s reputation as beinn amongst Ireland’s tidiest towns received a boost with councillors agreeing to apportion €15,000 next year to its local committee.

The county town’s CCTV network, consisting of 14 cameras dotted at different locations throughout the town is set to cost the local authority €6,600 in 2013.

Longford Town Council received 546 complaints in relation to housing tenants last year.

Despite the downturn affecting the local construction industry, Longford Town Council received 27 planning applications in 2012, four more than the 2011 total. As such, projected income from planning fees is estimated to raise €3,500.

Annual rent and capital costs incurred on the Town Council’s main building on the town’s Market Square are to command expenses of €85,000 this year.
