Taxi plate removed from driver after investigation

The licence plate of one taxi driver operating in Longford was seized after a joint operation by the Gardai and the Taxi Regulator in the town last Saturday night.

The joint operation by Longford traffic corps and the office of the Taxi Regulator started around 10pm last Saturday, with inspections taking place at the taxi rank at the Market Square. One male taxi driver was found to be in breach of the law, and his plate was removed. The Taxi Regulator will now investigate the matter further.

The office of the taxi regulator also carried out a survey with taxi drivers on Saturday, the results of which will be presented to the Superintendent in Longford Garda station in the coming weeks.

There was a notable decrease in the number of taxis available in Longford town on Saturday night, which would suggest some drivers finished their shift when the regulator arrived.

Longford taxi driver, Paddy Boyle, who has operated a taxi for 16 years, told the Leader these inspections should be more regular to ensure a properly regulated and fair taxi system in Longford. “We have often gone to the Gardai in Longford to complain about people operating taxis in the way that they shouldn’t in this town. There are taxis pulling up outside the chippers with their lights on and the rest of us are sitting in the taxi rank. The Gardai need to do more,” Mr Boyle said.
