St Mel’s Roadworks suffer another setback

Resurfacing works along one of Longford town’s busiest roads has been delayed for a second time, it was revealed this week.

Improvement measures to St Mel’s Road had originally been planned for last year but due to budgetary constraints, was re-scheduled to get underway early in 2013.

Expected to cost in the region of €100,000, council executives have decided to proceed with works in Teffia Park and Congress Terrace to facilitate the ongoing refurbishment of St Mel’s Cathedral.

Town engineer, Brian McNeela said the decision was taken because the council is presently awaiting a new planning application for external works on the cathedral to be carried out.

Given the heavy duty traffic that may result, Mr McNeela admitted the road would more than likely have to close for up to six weeks.

Despite Cllr Mae Sexton confessing residents were “breathing down her neck” over the hold-up, the majority of elected members backed the decision.

“People will understand because nobody in their right mind would object to anything that would impinge on the cathedral,” said Cllr Peggy Nolan.
