Shock over theft of Jesus from St Joseph’s crib
Longford Town Mayor, Cllr Peggy Nolan (FG) has described the theft of the Jesus statue from the crib at St Joseph’s Care Centre in the county town over the festive period as “appalling”.
The crib is one that is visited by numerous Longford people annually and holds a special place in the hearts of patients, staff and visitors to St Joseph’s Care Centre, which is located along the town’s Dublin Road.
“This is a most appalling act; to take the Baby Jesus from the Crib at St Joseph’s Care Centre and not return it, is just appalling,” fumed Cllr Nolan when she first heard of the theft. “From the moment I heard about this act of vandalism, I have felt very upset personally, for the patients and staff of St Joseph’s. Why would someone do such a thing? I just cannot understand it.”
The Town Mayor went on to say that the crib at the care centre, had been part of the facility since “the first stone was laid” there, and said she felt “deeply saddened” by the theft.
“The crib has been part of St Joseph’s since the first stone was laid there and shame on the person who did this,” she added further. “As mayor of this town, I am appalled that such a thing could happen in the first place. Whoever did this has no respect for themselves, for the crib or indeed for the elderly people in St Joseph’s who built this town and indeed this county, it has to be said. It was an act of vandalism of the highest order and I am shocked and upset by it.”
