Sale of Newcastle House moves closer
The sale of Newcastle House, one of Co Longford’s most historic residences looks set to be nearing a conclusion, it emerged this week.
Local auctioneer Jackie White of Raymond White Auctioneering confirmed the sale for the 300-year-old Manor House had been agreed with an overseas buyer.
Ms White was keen to stress however that the sales process was far from finalised, pointing out lawyers were now tieing up the final parts of the deal.
“It’s not sold yet,” said Ms White. “A sale has been agreed and they (buyer) are not local, but there was huge interest in it both locally and from overseas.”
Equipped with no fewer than 17 en-suite bedrooms, a private jetty, bar, equestrian stables, wine cellar and Victorian glasshouse, the property had earlier been alloted a guide price of €1.3 million.
It’s thought the house’s rich heritage, together with its relatively modest price stag, were just two of the reasons why such strong interest had been shown in the property.
Located on the banks of the River Inny, the house itself sits on 50 acres of mature parkland, surrounded by 900 acres of forest.
Formerly the residence of the King-Harman family, the residence was at one stage the largest estate in the region, comprising more than 30,000 acres. In 1949 the property was acquired by the Holy Rosary Sisters before being sold on to a private owner.
In more recent times, the house has steadily been restored by current owners, Joe and Suzanne Donovan. The couple purchased the property in 2000, using it mostly for weddings, private functions and events while at the same time painstakingly returning it to its former glory.
