Rural transport won’t be abolished
Cllr John Duffy (FG) has welcomed clarification from the Department of Transport regarding the Rural Transport Programme (RTP).
The north Longford representative was told that Minister Alan Kelly had full responsibility for the Programme and was currently conducting a review of this area. “There are no plans to abolish the rural transport programme,” said Cllr Duffy. “On the contrary, Minister Kelly is committed to strengthening the programme by ensuring a more efficient delivery structure and by maximising integration with other State transport services. Reviews conducted in 2011 recommended organisational restructuring as well as a number of other efficiencies. They also recommended better alignment of the 35 Rural Transport Programme groups with local authorities.”
Cllr Duffy is a member of the Rural Transport Steering Group and has pledged to continue to work towards enhancing the RTP.
