Robbed for just €65

A woman in her 20s was arrested and questioned last Friday morning following a burglary at the home of a retired priest in Granard on Thursday, August 2 last at approximately 6:30pm.

The Leader understands that the suspect was later released and a file has since been sent to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in respect of the matter.

Gardaí say that this is the second time in as many weeks that the elderly priest has been targeted.

The woman who was questioned is believed to be originally from Co Westmeath, but living in the Granard area. It is understood that €65 was stolen in the burglary. A garda spokesperson said that the victim was shaken after the incident and confirmed that he had also been targeted by thieves two weeks prior to last Thursday.

“A woman was arrested in relation to last Thursday’s incident and a file is currently with the DPP,” the spokesperson added.

“This is the second time in two weeks that the person was targeted, and he was visibly shaken after the incident.”

Gardaí have also issued a warning to elderly and vulnerable people who live alone to exercise “vigilance” and to ensure that they do not answer their doors to strangers.

They have also advised people living locally to “check in” on their elderly neighbours and to report any suspicious activity to the Gardaí.
