Recession impact on crime levels
An almost 50 per cent fall off in drunkeness and public order offences is because people have less money at their disposal.
Last week, members of Granard’s Joint Policing Committee (JPC) learned that alcohol fuelled incidents had dropped by 50 per cent last year when compared to 2011 figures.
Relaying statistics at its quarterly meeting last Tuesday evening, Superintendent Ian Lackey revealed serious assaults had declined by the same number, a factor he said could be linked to external economic factors.
“Those (serious assaults) would be in line with national figures. It has a lot to do with less people going out and people perhaps having less money,” he said.
