Rathowen Post Office raided

Rathowen Post Office was raided on Monday afternoon and the raiders escaped with a small amount of money.

Two men entered the busy store at around 4pm on Monday afternoon before leaving shortly afterwards. Seconds later, a man brandishing an axe ran into the post office and demanded money from horrified members of staff.

In attempting to gain entry to the post office's main holding area, the assailant caused substantial damage to the office's glass protected counter.

It is also understood the raider, who escaped with a small sum of cash and who was not wearing a balaclava, had a getaway car waiting outside which sped off in the direction of Mullingar.

Anyone with information about Tuesday's raid is asked to contact Mullingar Garda Station at 044 934 8915.
