Priest speaks out at tragic Leitrim man’s funeral

A priest, who this week led tributes at the funeral of tragic Co Leitrim student Andrew Dolan, said the popular sportsman always shunned “any form of violence” and was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Fr Frank Garvey told mourners at St Mary’s Church last Friday of how Mr Dolan’s untimely death had left his parents Joe and Rosie heartbroken.

A former president of St Mel’s College, Fr Garvey also hit out at the increasing prevalence of anti social behaviour in towns and villages throughout the country.

“How utterly unthinkable that he (Mr Dolan) should be the victim of an unprovoked and vicious assault, so cruelly snatched away. It should not have happened.

“Why can’t innocent young people go out and celebrate with their friends without the menace of unwarranted attack by those who seem intent on random acts of violence and mayhem?” he asked.
