President drops into Esquires for coffee

President Mary McAleese and her husband Martin dropped into the newly opened Esquires coffee shop at the N4 Axis in Longford town last Tuesday.

They were on a return journey from holidaying in the West when delighted onlookers watched as they walked through the doors of the restaurant.

Esquires is owned by Fergal McGovern and Rona O'Sullivan and it opened its doors in Longford town last month.

They also own Esquires in Carrick-on-Shannon and the President and her husband are regular customers there. "It was great to see them," Fergal told the Leader. "They were on their way back from holidays and they dropped in to see us. They had a bite to eat and the president loves the hot chocolate and Martin likes the cappuccino.

"They are very good customers of ours in Carrick-on-Shannon and they are very supportive of the fact that we established the business during a recession and now employ 40 people."

Local people who were in the coffee shop at the time were delighted to see the President and her husband.

"They stayed about 40 minutes and they said that they would be back again soon," Fergal concluded.
