Pensioner foils break-in
An intruder, who gained access to a house in Lanesboro by breaking through a lower panel of the front door, got a rude awakening when he was confronted by the elderly resident who forced him to leave the house the same way he entered.
Gardaí have launched an appeal for information after the incident in Maheraveen, near Lanesboro last Friday night.
The intruder is believed to have gained access to the house by breaking through a lower panel of the front door between 110.30pm and midnight. He was confronted by an elderly man who was in the house at the time, and was forced to leave the same way he entered. It is believed that nothing was taken during the incident.
Meanwhile €400 in cash and a quantity of jewellery were stolen from a house on Killashee Street in Longford town last week.
The incident, which occurred between 11am and 12pm on Wednesday, January 30, bears similar hallmarks to another event reported by this paper recently. A man called to the front door of the house looking for a glass of water, and the occupant, a pensioner, later realised that the door keys had gone missing. It is believed the cash and jewellery were stolen subsequently.
Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and contact Longford garda station on 043 3346741. A garda spokesman also advised elderly people to ask for ID before allowing strangers to enter their home, and reminded people to keep an eye out for their older or infirm neighbours.
