Pay charges or incur penalties - County Council

Longford County Council has urged residents in the county to pay the household charge to enable it to fund local services in 2012 and the first half of 2013.

A spokesperson for the authority also said people who do not pay now, will face further interest penalties and possible legal action.

In a statement to the Leader, the council said: “A campaign of organised resistance against the charge has resulted in reduced collection levels. “This fact has forced the Government to take action and impose cuts in the Local Government Fund.

“The outcome of the campaign is a reduction in funding available to Longford Local Authorities of €330,000. This is money which is permanently lost to the Council and cutbacks have already been made to services to deal with this shortfall.”

While the council has thanked those householders who have already paid the charge, it also wants to remind the remaining householders that it is vital that full compliance is achieved.

The council confirmed to the Leader that it is taking additional measures to prompt compliance with the charge. Contact has been made with various groups - such as the owners of second properties - to remind them of their legal obligations and the consequences of non-compliance.

This will be followed up with a more comprehensive campaign based on Property Registration Authority data.

“In order to avoid further interest and penalties and possible legal action, all house owners are urged to pay the charge without further delay”, the statement read.

Payment can be made in the following ways: online at www.householdcharge.ie, by posting an application form to PO Box 12168, Dublin 1 or at the County Council Cash Desk in Camlin Court Offices, Great Water Street, Longford.
