Longford rugby player Derek Bannon has died following a car accident in Sligo on Monday night. Speaking to the Leader, Derek Turner of Longford Rugby Club described him as “a very popular member of the club.”

The laundry facility formerly located in the industrial school in Newtownforbes has been omitted from the McAleese Report on Magdalene Laundries. However, a spokesman said it was listed in the Ryan Report, and former residents who were abused during their time there are entitled to take their cases to the Redress Board.

In sport, Longford suffered another setback in their Division 2 campaign after losing to Westmeath on Sunday. The final score was 2-7 to 1-8. Manager Glenn Ryan hopes to have a stronger team available to face Armagh in three weeks’ time.
