Over €200,000 in sports funding has been allocated under the Sports Capital Programme 2012 to County Longford.

The Leader understands that €205,000 will be making its way to a number of projects across the county.

So far, St Mary’s Edgeworthstown Community Campus has been allocated €40,000 under the Programme, while Longford Swimming Special Olympics is set to receive €1,900; Sacred Heart NS, Granard Celtic, Granard Community Games gets an allocation of €21,400; Clonguish GAA €20,000; Higginstown Community Group, €10,000; Lanesboro Boxing Club, €4,000; Longford RFC, €10,700; Lanesboro Triathlon, €20,000 and Longford Slashers GFC receives, €75,000

“It is heartening to see that although the economic crises of the last few years has seen an absence in funding since 2007/2008, essential sporting and youth related projects are now being funded to a reasonable degree,” Deputy James Bannon (FG) declared on Monday.

Cllr Frank Kilbride (FG) said that the money allocated to St Mary’s Community Campus there, would serve as a major boost to the organisation. adding that the “hard working committee” were very deserving of the funding allocation.

A total of 2,170 applications were received under this year’s programme – making it one of the most successful, with the highest number of applications ever received, recorded.
