Not Guilty Plea to Rape and Murder Charges
A County Longford man has pleaded not guilty to rape and murder charges at a preliminary hearing held at the Edinburgh High Court today (Friday, September 10).
Patrick Rae (40) has been charged with the rape and murder of mother Mary McLaren (34) in Dundee, Scotland, earlier this year.
He is also charged with attempting to defeat the ends of justice.
Mrs McLaren went missing following a night out with her sister in Dundee on February 25.
Her body was found on an embankment near Dundee's Ladywell roundabout almost two weeks later.
During today's preliminary hearing at the High Court, Mr Rae was charged with assaulting Mrs McLaren between February 25 and March 10 at North Marketgait and elsewhere in Dundee.
Mr Rae is also accused of repeatedly struck her head and body against a hard surface and forcibly removed her clothing.
Mr Rae is also charged with striking her on the neck with a knife or similar instrument and placing fabric over her throat, as well as seizing her by the throat and compressing it, restricting her breathing.
It is also alleged that he concealed Mrs McLaren's body under leaf litter and plant foliage at North Marketgait and then disposed of a coat and bag belonging to her.
Judge Lord Kinclaven fixed a further preliminary hearing in the case for October 21 next at the High Court, Edinburgh.
