No decision on possible Longford Garda station closures yet

There has been no official decision on the number and the location of possible Garda station closures in Co Longford, the Leader has learned.

Renewed fears of a sweeping wave of garda station closures across Co Longford have been roundly dismissed this week despite government plans to trim numbers by almost 100 by the end of the year.

Over the weekend, reports emerged that Longford was likely to be one of the counties hardest hit alongside Cavan, Westmeath and Roscommon.

It had been claimed stations in rural parts of Longford and up to seven locations in Cavan and Westmeath were contained in a review of the country’s 664 stations currently being finalised by Garda Commissioner Martin Callinan.

However, the Leader has learned no final decision as to what stations, if any, are likely to fall under that review.

Details of the revieware expected to be handed over to Justice Minister Alan Shatter next month.

“There has been no word yet,” said a well placed source this week. “There might be a small number in danger but we (gardai) haven’t heard anything yet.”

As rank and file members await the publication of Mr Shatter’s report, it’s believed those most at risk centre largely on one man stations.

These include the likes of Newtowncashel, Ballinalee and Ardagh, even though a full time officer was only recently added to the mid Longford village.

“No one in any garda division would know at this stage what is being planned,” said another source this week.
