New Year’s Eve fracas in Longford

Three men involved in a fracas along Longford town’s Ballymahon Street on New Year’s Eve appeared before a special sitting of Longford District Court on New Year’s Day, charged under the Public Order and Firearms and Offensive Weapons Acts.

The three men, two of whom are from Longford and the third with a north Dublin address, were among a group of approximately ten people who became involved in the row at a licensed premises along the town’s main thoroughfare at 10.55pm on New Year’s Eve. The Leader understands that a number of golf clubs were also used and gardaí are describing the altercation as “a serious incident”.

“There was approximately ten males involved in this serious incident which spilled out onto the street from the licensed premises,” a garda spokesperson said. “Some form of spray was used initially in the bar, however golf clubs were used outside on the street.”

Gardaí said that while a number of individuals involved in the fracas sustained “minor injuries”, nobody was hospitalised and CCTV footage in currently being examined.

“Three males were subsequently arrested at the scene and taken to Longford Garda Station where they were formally charged in respect of the matter,” the Garda spokesperson continued. “They appeared before a special court sitting the following day and have been remanded on conditional bail to appear back at Longford District Court on January 8.” Gardaí are continuing to investigate the matter.
