New chairman appointed to Fine Gael branch in Ballymahon

The local branch of Fine Gael in Ballymahon has a new face at the helm, after a new branch chairman was elected at a recent meeting.

Michael Delaney was appointed to the position following the party’s Ballymahon area AGM. “I was asked by Paul Ross at the meeting if I’d be interested in the role, and the nomination was seconded by Larry Bannon,” Mr Delaney said.

Mr Delaney, who is 31, is well known in the local area as one of the organisers of the award-winning Helium festival, which attracts hundreds of music fans to the County Longford town each summer.

Michael has not always been involved with party politics in the area. “I’ve had a lot of things keeping me busy, but lately I’ve become more involved locally,” he explained. And speaking about his alliegence to Fine Gael, he said it was a decision he made himself, and not one based on historical connections. “There’s no real family background there – but I’m not a fan of dynasty politics anyway. I have my opinions, and everyone else in my family has their own opinions,” he admitted. “I really only became involved in politics when I was at college. I was PRO for Fine Gael at GMIT, and I was a member of Paul Connaughtan Jr’s election team in Galway.”

Mr Delaney is due to take charge of his first area meeting in the coming weeks: “We’re still figuring out a date, but it’ll be taking place soon. James Bannon is out of the country at the moment, so we just have to wait until he gets back.”

He also added that he is optimistic about the branch’s future. “Right now we have around 20 or 30 attending our meetings, but I hope to be able to add to that,” he said.
