Motorists urged to drive with caution this weekend

Motorists in County Longford are being advised to exercise caution on the roads this weekend, particularly at night and in the early hours of the morning due to predicted frost and some freezing fog.

Today (Friday) is expected to remain dry and sunny for the rest of the day with any remaining fog continuing to clear. Highest temperatures 6 to 9 degrees in light breezes. Tonight however will have widespread frost and for according to the national forecaster, Met Eireann. Lowest air temperatures will be zero to -3 degrees.

A spokesperson from Met Eireann told the Leader: "Tomorrow, Saturday will be a generally dry day with sunny spells. A few wintry showers may occur in eastern coastal counties later. Highest temperatures 6 to 9 degrees in a moderate easterly breeze.

"The overall outlook for the weekend is cold, mainly dry and settled weather with an Anticyclone near or over Ireland. Temperatures will be below normal for March, with maxima of 6 to 9 degrees. Most nights will be cold and frosty especially the first few nights. We will be in store for a cold night on Saturday Night. Widespread frost, slight to sharp generally, but locally severe in parts of the north and east. A few patches of mist, fog and ice also. Lowest temperatures plus 2 to - 2 C, in a moderate southeasterly breeze. Most places dry, but the odd wintry flurry is possible.

"Sunday will be a dry, bright day with sunny spells in most places. Temperatures by early afternoon will be 6 to 9 C, in a moderate locally fresh southeasterly breeze. It will be very cold overnight, with a hard frost, and a few patches of mist. Lowest temperatures zero to -5 C.

"Monday and Tuesday will be cool, bright and mainly dry days in the main, with sunny spells and afternoon temperatures of 6 to 9 degrees. But a few showers are possible along parts of the west coast on Tuesday. Winds light south to southeasterly, so feeling reasonable pleasant enough in middle of the day. But still cold enough at night for some frost."
