A delegation from the Mexican town to which Longford will be twinned with within weeks will not be present on St Patrick’s Day as planned, due to a change in government in Mexico, the Leader has learned.

Representatives from the town – San Miguel Deallende – will however visit the county town in May when it is expected that the twinning will be signed, sealed and delivered and new trade and educational liks established between the sides.

Speaking to the Leader, Town Clerk Dan Rooney said that the visit had been “rescheduled” and he pointed to a meeting with took place between Longford representatives and the Mexican Ambassador Carlos Eugenio Garcia de Alba last Monday at his Exellency’s residence in Dublin.

“This process is all about establishing business, education, cultural and social links between the towns and we had a number of business people with us on Monday,” Mr Rooney said. “There is a lot of interest in Mexico with regard to doing business in Longford and there are a number of Longford businesses who feel the same way; the ambassador really wants to establish these links in Longford and he is very impressed by the service provided by St Christopher’s Services. Education is also something that he wants to develop between the towns.”

Town Mayor Cllr Peggy Nolan (FG) said that, while it was disapointing that the Mexican delegation would not be in Longford for St Patrick’s Day, the upcoming agreement between the towns “was one of the most positive developments for Longford in a long time”.

“This is an exciting time for Longford and we will have the Mexican delgation here with us in May at an event that will coninside with the Gathering Ireland 2013,” she said. “The ambassador palns to work with four pillars – education, business, social and cultural and we look forward to developing all those further in the coming months.”
