Lough Ree divers take part in Union Hall search

A dozen members from a Co Longford-based dive and rescue team were among a recovery crew of around 300 volunteers who took part in a massive search for two missing fishermen in Co Cork last weekend.
The divers, all of whom are connected to Lanesboro’s Lough Ree Sub Aqua Club, spent much of Sunday trawling the waterways of Glandour Harbour in the search for missing skipper, Michael Hayes (52) and Egyptian crewman Saied Aly Eldin (23).
Both men were aboard Mr Hayes’ trawler, the Tit Bonhomme, when it sank on January 15 in rough seas off Adam Island.
Egyptian national Abdo Mohamad was the only survivor as search and rescue teams recovered the bodies of three other missing crewmen-Kevin Kershaw, Attea Shaban and Wael Mohamad in the days following the tragedy.
And as the search entered its third week on Sunday, it emerged diving specialists from the well established Lough Ree Sub Aqua club joined local coast guard teams and civil defence units in the massive land, sea and air search operation.
“It was very frustrating and disappointing for us all that we didn’t come back with a positive result,” said club member Frank Casey on Monday.
