Lots of laughs at Liveline show

RTE’s Liveline programme along with presenter Joe Duffy and a host of comic talent brought their Fiver Friday show to The Longford Arms Hotel on Friday afternoon last.

The popular day-time chat show brought along some well-known faces from the Irish comedy scene including Funny Friday regulars Doc Savage, Bob Curley, Noel V Ginnity and Syl Fox.

Even An Taoiseach Enda Kenny, Minister for Finance Michael Noonan and Uachtaran na hEireann Michael D Higgins made quick visits to the venue, although more in spirit than body.

Doc Savage began proceedings during the RTE Radio 1 news bulletin, warming up the crowd before pantomime veteran June Rodgers charmed those in attendance in her own particular way.

Renowned impressionist Oliver Callan, star of 2FM’s Nob Nation and Radio One’s Green Tea, joined the Funny Friday crew along with fellow voice artist Frank Forde. Both men brought along such esteemed friends as Minister for Social Protection Joan Burton and former GAA commentator Michael O’Muircheartaigh.

Fiver Friday encourages listeners to Liveline to spend an extra fiver on the designated day. Explaining the concept, Joe Duffy says: “This is the day we encourage people to go to their local shop, hairdresser, pub, clothes shop, shoe shop, whatever you’re having and we ask them to spend the extra fiver to get things going in.”

Amongst the Longford businesses who contributed to the initiative were Longford town based Vincent Maguire Hair Supplies on Richmond Street, JJ O’Rourke Hardware on the Athlone Road, Hair Square on Market Square and Torc Café on New Street. Torc proprietor Ruth McGarry-Quinn spoke for a short time about her Fiver Friday deals which were inspired by the show.

Ruth was also presented with a special hamper as part of the Local Heroes programme which celebrates those who support job creation and do something visionary in their local community.

Mayor of Longford Cllr Peggy Nolan was also present on the afternoon and welcomed Liveline to Longford. Cllr Nolan described hosting the show in Longford as an “absolute privilege.”
