Refurbishment complete at St John's Church
St. John's Church in Streete has come to the end of a six year restoration and redocoration project which cost p500,000.
The scheme attracting funding from various government and heritage bodies but the amount raised in the town and county was remarkable, according to organisers.
"The Auction and the 'Who wants to be a Thousandaire' were obvious successes but more than twice as much came from private donations," a spokesperson said.
Mr. Peter Wilson of Lismore Cartrons, the secretary of the Restoration Committee said "Whilst the parishioners gave 100 percent, without the support of the wider community we would not be where we are today."
St. John's Church forms a striking landmark on the north side of Longford.
It is close to the river in the oldest part of the town, occupying the site of a Dominican Abbey which was presumedly dedicated to St. Michael, as in 'Templemichael'. Visitors have commented on the unusual beauty of St. John's which results from it dating from the 1700s and the church having been restored using materials and colours of that period.
On Thursday September 3 next at 8pm, Bishop Ken Clarke will preside and preach at a specially composed Service of Thanksgiving in St. John's Church.
"Everyone will be welcome," the Rector, Canon David Catterall told the Leader.
