Longford's Value Centre to close

The company which owns the Value Centre Cash and Carry on Longford's Richmond Street have announced that the store is to cease trading. The wholesale operator, which has been in existence in the town for over forty years, employs six full time staff. Speaking to the Leader this week a spokesperson for BWG Foods Ltd, the parent company of the Value Centre Cash and Carry said that the centre will close following a review of operations.

The Longford town branch will now transfer to the Value Centre in Mullingar. The parent company have also promised to retain two jobs for Longford employees within its other branches.

The spokesperson said, "The Value Centre branch in Longford currently employs a total of six full-time staff. It is planned to retain two roles within the business. The company will be seeking four redundancies from Longford as part of the re-organisation."

They continued to say: "BWG has initiated a proactive consultation process with both staff and their union representatives around this reorganisation. The company has also implemented a comprehensive 'Out Placement Programme' to support affected employees during the process which is expected to be completed by November."

The President of the Longford Chamber of Commerce Seamus Butler told the Leader that he is very saddened by the news of the closure.

"BWG's Cash and Carry in Longford has been part of commercial life in Longford for many years. I know Sylvester Carroll, the former Manager there very well and it's regretful to see the business go.

"We are living in difficult circumstances, it's indicative that a business that has been established for forty years is no longer in Longford – unfortunately if a business wants to survive today they have to change and adapt. The models that have applied in the past no longer apply."

Mr Butler then informed the Leader that the Longford Chamber of Commerce are currently organising a seminar with the financial institutions in Longford and all of the businesses in the town to aid businesses during the recession. He concluded by saying: "We have also called for a six per cent reduction in rates to try and help local businesses survive."
