Longford snubbed by Google maps
There is widespread outrage brewing over Longford’s scandalous absence from map of Ireland on Google Maps.
The town is peculiarly referred to as ‘Prospect Wood.’ One can zoom in to see various towns such as Edgeworthstown, Lanesborough and Ballymahon highlighted. Moving northwards, one can see even small towns in Cavan such as Village and Killeshandra also flagged (obviously the whizzes who run Google Maps are major fans of the Wolfe Tones).
Quite how the employees of Google Maps got the impression this town went by the name of a decade-old estate on the edge of the town is unknown at this stage.
Longfordians are used to complaing of being ignored and overlooked by the media but this snub really is the most gauling yet. Despite the sterling efforts this summer of Paul Barden, Sean McCormack, Keith Gillespie and Tony Cousins to put Longford on the map, Google Maps are having none of it.
Google Maps mysterious bias against midland towns with League of Ireland soccer teams is also in evidence in the fact that Athlone is also absent from the map, replaced by Clonbrusk. This offers some solace for Longford people in that we’re not alone in this fight.
However, the time has come to end all this, let’s resolve to put Longford on the map.
