Longford News ceases publication

The Longford News has ceased publication. Staff at the newspaper in Longford Town were informed of the news today.

The Roscommon Champion and the Athlone Voice are also to cease publication from today. Staff at the three newspapers were informed of the decision earlier this afternoon.

The Longford News has been an institution in Co Longford since it commenced publication in 1936. It is believed the newspaper employs six people in Co Longford. In total, Alpha Newspapers, which is owned by former Unionist MP John Taylor and his family, employs around 30 people across the three titles. It is believed that staff members will meet with representatives from the newspaper group later in the week.

In a statement issued last night, the group's managing director Jonathan Taylor said that all three titles were up for sale.
