57 picnickers took part in the Brain Injury Awareness Global Picnic at the Longford Rugby Club last Saturday June 30 from 2 to 4pm. The event was recorded, timed and all conditions were completed for the picnic to qualify as part of an international attempt to enter the Guinness Book of Records. “Here in Longford we’re part of the bid to reach over 22 thousand people having a picnic on the same day around the world for the Guinness Book of Records,” said Sandy Roper. “It’s to bring attention to brain injury as a huge cause of disability.” Sandy is the volunteer facilitator of the Brí group in Longford for people who’ve had brain injuries and their families and carers. In Longford the Global Picnic world record bid is being jointly run between Disabled People of Longford (DPOL) and Brí.

Brain injuries are the result of head injuries, strokes and other causes. Brí is the national voluntary organisation for support and advocacy to people and families who have had brain injuries. DPOL is a voluntary group founded in 1993 by and for Longford people with physical and sensory disabilities to support members with common needs.
