Longford engineering firm lays off 45 staff

One of County Longford’s largest employers has laid off 45 of its staff with immediate effect, it has been announced.

The Fenelon Group confirmed the news earlier today with the move being blamed on the fall-off in the construction industry.

All of the staff affected are connected to the firm’s engineering section with staff being told of the impending decision last week.

A spokesperson said despite the job losses, other facets of the Fenelon Group would remain in place, ahead of a transfer of premises from its existing Templemichael Estate headquarters to one located in the Townspark area of Longford town.

“It was a difficult decision to have to make, but large site work is just no longer around,” said a spokesperson.
