Local campaign against charges launched
The Longford campaign against the household charge is building up momentum after a number of events were held over the past week.
Last Tuesday night, over 150 people attended a meeting of the Campaign Against Household and Water Charges (CAHWT) in the Longford Arms Hotel, in protest at the introduction of the €100 charge.
The CAHWT have organised meetings throughout the country in the last number of weeks in protest at the introduction of the household tax as well as water and septic tank charges. After Tuesday’s meeting, a working group for Longford was formed to organise further protests.
A number of local people also agreed to distribute the 4500 newsletters earmarked for Longford county.
The meeting in the Longford Arms was organised by the national steering group of the CAHWT, with United Left Alliance TD for Dublin South Central, Joan Collins addressing the crowd. Mrs Collins told the Leader she was standing in solidarity with people in this country who cannot afford to pay these new charges.
“This comes about because of a culmination of all the other taxes that have hit us and people just feel like they’ve been cut to the bone. Unlike other taxes, this is the first time people have been voluntarily asked to pay.
“The universal social charge, pension levies and pay cuts have all been taken from us at source but what we’re saying to people here is: they do have a choice. Don’t register and don’t pay,” the Dublin South-Central TD said.
